Major Players Begin Delivering Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) to Shippers

Recently, both large and small truck companies announced plans to sell more battery-electric trucks to customers– some of whom are new customers, others who have bought before, and others who were informed years ago but have been waiting patiently.

Volvo Trucks announced that Amazon will receive 20 Volvo FH electric trucks by the end of this year for use in Europe. The truck company also predicts that, by 2030, half of all its new trucks sold will be either battery or fuel cell electric models.

In the United States, Volvo Trucks North America announced that California-based Performance Team, a unit of Maersk Co., took delivery of its first 30 Volvo VNR electric trucks in October. These trucks are for its Southern California operations, with 16 operating from Santa Fe Springs and an additional 14 truck set to begin operating soon from Commerce.

In total, Performance ordered 126 Volvo VNR electric heavy-duty trucks to service its short-haul warehouse distribution routes. Additionally, Mack Trucks (a unit of Volvo Group) announced that its Mack LR electric refuse truck would be operating in Florida’s Miami-Dade metropolitan area. Finally, Mack reported that it hopes 35% of all global sales will be fully electric by 2030.

In the fall of 2023, a Mack LR electric garbage truck for Cary, North Carolina, is anticipated to be completely operational. This order makes Cary the first municipality in North Carolina to buy a Mack LR electric refuse vehicle. On Twitter on October 6, Tesla founder Elon Musk said that the Tesla Semi truck was in production and would ship on December 1 under contract with PepsiCo.

Recently, Xos Inc., which is based in Los Angeles and manufactures battery-electric commercial vehicles that are Class 5-8 split the delivery of 65 vans between Antioch in Northern California and Alhambra Southern California. This was a return order from customer Merchants Fleet management company. With this recent delivery, it brings the total number of Xos step vans delivered to 123 which Merchant plans to electrify 50% by 2030.
